Name of organization:
Dream Achievers Youth Organization (DAYO)
Description of organization:
DAYO was founded in 2005 by a group of young volunteers in the Kisauni region of Kenya, who wanted to explore theater as a tool of passing educational messages to the community. The organization works to mitigate the challenges faced by young people, particularly those affected by health issues.
Project description/context:
DAYO notes that radicalization and violent extremism has been growing recently amongst the diverse groups on the Kenyan coast. To address these issues, the project aims to raise awareness on the need for a peaceful co-existence, electoral integrity and stability in the region. This will be done through live theater performances, radio talk shows and awareness-raising campaign, addressing youth and community at large.
Expected results:
By the end of the project, DAYO expects to:
- Raise awareness among stakeholders on issues of national cohesion, peace building and dangers of extremism;
- Recruit and train 15 youth actors who will conduct six live theatre outreach performances for 1000 youth from select communities;
- Film, edit and distribute a DVD of performances to 300 stakeholders; and
- Air four radio talk shows through a partnership with FM radio.
