Name of Organization:
Yayasan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Indonesia Cerdas (YPMIC)
Description of Organization:
Founded by a group of nurses and supported by experts in peacebuilding, interreligious dialogue and disaster management, YPMIC aims to contribute to the promotion of peace in Indonesia through activities related to social welfare, education and training, research, community development, public relations and fundraising. YPMIC’s long-term vision is to help build an intelligent, independent and prosperous Indonesian society through its social, humanitarian and religious activities.
Context:
Incidents of online hate speech are on the rise in Indonesia. Since 2018, the Indonesian Ministry of Information has blocked at least 3,640 items it deemed as hate speech content in cyberspace. Recent media reports suggest that young people in Indonesia prefer to view content related to radical religious subjects online and online spaces are a hub for the recruitment of radicalized youth. It also has been alleged that young people in Indonesia who are susceptible to online radical content have participated in spreading hate speech online and perpetrated violent acts against religious sites. For instance, at least some of the perpetrators of fatal incidents that have occurred at religious sites in South Salawesi Province and other parts of Indonesia were radicalized and recruited online, it has been claimed.
Proposed Project and Expected Results:
The project aims to address an increase in incidents of online hate speech and vandalism of places of worship perpetrated by youth and promote religious tolerance through the active engagement of young people in the Province of South Sulawesi in activities designed to spread peace narratives and safeguard religious sites. The project emphasizes direct engagement and cooperation among participants during the delivery of diverse activities such as peace training, site visits, digital campaigns, talk shows and exhibitions.
