Description of Organization:
Ikon Initiative for Sustainable Development is a non-profit, youth-led organization in Sierra Leone that empowers youth through the promotion of education, inclusion and sustainable development. The organization provides young people with the skills, tools and opportunities they need to thrive and become agents of change in their communities. By promoting active youth participation and engagement, the organization aims to create a brighter future for young people and contribute to the country’s overall development.
Context:
Election-related violence in Bombali district in northern Sierra Leone poses a significant threat to post-election peace and stability by undermining democratic processes and generating unrest, hatred, and mistrust among community members, including youth, tribal leaders, religious leaders and local authorities. Long-standing political tensions, historical grudges, civic illiteracy, and a lack of effective conflict resolutions mechanisms are among the root causes of election-related violence.
Proposed Project and Expected Results:
The project focuses on promoting peace and conflict resolution through community engagement. Activities related to intercultural dialogue, sports, drama and peace education activities are designed to create safe spaces for open conversations, foster empathy and equip community members with conflict resolution skills. The project’s community-led approach encourages local ownership and relevance aids in the effectiveness of its peacebuilding efforts.
