Name of Organization:
AlMahrousa for Development and Participation – MDP
Description of Organization:
AlMahrousa – MDP is an Egyptian non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing sustainable human development by fostering socioeconomic empowerment and a vibrant civil society; promoting the participation of citizens in public life, peacebuilding, social transformation, and sustainable development solutions; and enabling marginalized and vulnerable groups to exercise their rights and improve their quality of life.
Context:
Polarization and extremism among migrants from other African countries and Egyptian youth has increased in Egypt as more and more migrants from diverse cultures, races and religions have chosen to relocate to Egypt. The migrant population in Egypt includes people from at least 133 countries. Sudanese (4 million) make up the largest number of migrants followed by Syrians (1.5 million), Yemenis (1 million) and Libyans (1 million). Protracted instability has driven increasing numbers of Sudanese, South Sudanese, Syrian, Ethiopian, Iraqi and Yemeni individuals to seek refuge in Egypt since 2019, which has caused challenges related to discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities, social fragmentation and distrust.
Proposed Project and Expected Results:
The project aims to empower young migrants and young Egyptians to take an active role in building more inclusive and peaceful communities through the creation of an environment that enables social cohesion, mutual understanding and cultural diversity among migrant and Egyptian youth in three Greater Cairo hosting communities. The project includes the development of plans of action and community initiatives to counter social polarization and ethnic/religious extremism by young leaders from both groups.
