Name of Organization:
Access Youth Initiative Uganda
Description of Organization:
Access Youth Initiative Uganda is a youth centred non-governmental organization that aims to foster a culture of fairness and justice and respect for human rights and strives to unlock the potential of a new generation of young leaders through experiential learning. The organization’s innovative and holistic approaches are designed to provide the skills required of confident, skillful and visionary young leaders.
Context:
Rwenzori in south-western Uganda is considered one of the most violent areas of the country due to the intermittent outbreak of conflicts that are orchestrated by various actors who instrumentalize political, social, cultural and economic differences to trigger and intensify intra- and inter-group animosities as a means to advance their respective political agendas. These outbreaks are compounded by the influx of refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Somalia who subsequently are recruited by rebel groups.
Proposed Project and Expected Results:
The project aims to break down barriers, build mutual respect and trust and forge resilient relationships for sustainable peace among conflicting youth groups by strengthening their engagement and meaningful inclusion in peacebuilding processes and efforts to prevent violent extremism. Activities such as mediation and dialogue sessions, youth camps and sports tournaments are designed to build a network of young peace champions. The project integrates intergenerational exchange, community service and mentorship with innovative information and communication technology and sports activities to build resilient relationships and encourage intercultural conversations for peace.
