Name of organization:
Students for Global Democracy Uganda (SFGD)
Description of organization:
SFGD is a student-led organization with the goal of encouraging young people to effectively participate in sustainable development and the democratic process. The organization was established in 2010 and works across Uganda.
Project description/context:
The project is aimed at students of Uganda and as noted by SFGD, follows the formation of youth brigades attached to different political parties within universities without a counterbalancing interfaith youth initiative to promote values of peace, harmony and reconciliation. University students will be engaged through training, campaigns and events on issues such as interfaith and intercultural understanding, peace-building and non-violent behavior.
Expected results:
By the end of this project, SFGD expects to:
- Train 400 youth and student leaders in four universities on interfaith and intercultural understanding, peace building skills and non-violent behavior;
- Conduct seminars, public service events, sports galas and documentary screenings with discussion forums on myths and misconceptions leading to interfaith and intercultural tensions, with a total target audience of 800 young people;
- Train 200 young people to distribute peace messages amongst their peers in four universities, through actions such as conducting surveys and focus groups, forming Peace Clubs, developing educational material, holding essay-writing competitions, constructing Peace Walls and organizing events; and
- Mobilize 200 stakeholders through conferences on addressing ethnic tensions and religious differences among young people.
