Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations
New York – December 6th, 2013
The UN Alliance of Civilizations is deeply saddened by the passing of the African leader Nelson Mandela, an icon and a true leader who had transformed South Africa into a land of diversity and co-existence after decades of struggle for freedom, justice and equality. I would like to express my sincere condolences to his family, friends and the great nation and Government of South Africa.
The today’s world of unrest and challenges will miss and remember Nelson Mandela as an exceptional figure, a pillar of peace, justice and an advocate of non-violence. Even after spending 27 years in jail, Mandela emerged from his detention without feelings of hatred or revenge. He chose forgiveness for reconciliation and not retribution.
Such is the legacy of Madiba and the world ought to renew its pledge to work toward these noble goals. May, he rest in peace.
