UNAOC Research Partner, The African Centre for Migration and Society at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, has released a recent report titled ‘Governing Migration and Urbanisation in South African Municipalities: Developing Approaches to Counter Poverty and Social Fragmentation’.
According to the report, many South African local authorities have been unable to address challenges related to migration, including inter-group conflict, economic marginalization, and the inability to access suitable services. One of the most fundamental challenges to local government in protecting the welfare of migrants and other residents is how little municipalities actually know about people living in their jurisdiction.
In light of these problems, the report seeks to outline some of the major issues preventing local government from promoting the wellbeing of all residents and migrants, regardless of nationality or legal status, in South African municipalities.
