United Nations Alliance of Civilizations
In Honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
In all corners of the world, we have witnessed a menacing erosion of universal values and growing social and cultural divides. Racial discrimination, anti-Muslim hatred, anti-Semitism, hate speech and bigotry, are all in full swing.
Atrocity crimes continue to shock the conscience of humanity. The recent massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand, shook everyone to the core. Our hearts remain heavy with grief and sympathy for the families of the victims.
Today’s challenges are testing our resilience. But we have an opportunity to demonstrate our shared responsibility and practical commitment to reclaim the notion of universal fraternity as the bedrock of international cooperation.
In the midst of rising identity-based conflicts, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) works diligently to promote respect for diversity, understanding, and tolerance between people. UNAOC remains particularly committed to fostering interreligious and intercultural dialogue as a tool for combating intolerance, racial discrimination, negative stereotyping, and incitement to violence.
The mantra of UNAOC is “Many Cultures, One Humanity.” The diversity of cultures is indeed a fundamental feature of human society and a driving force of human progress. There cannot be peace if we don’t accept and harness diversity. There cannot be development and economic growth if we do not embrace diversity. The goal of sustaining peace and prevention of conflict can only be achieved if we learn to live together in inclusive, just and peaceful societies.
Today and every day, we must stand united against racial discrimination. We must #FightRacism.
