The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) will be participating in observances of the World Interfaith Harmony Week (February 1-7, 2011) by its partners in New York and around the world. President Jorge Sampaio, High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations had earlier welcomed the resolution and encouraged the participation of UNAOC partners in observing the week. More than 100 events around the world have been planned in support of the World Interfaith Harmony Week, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on October 20, 2010.
On February 3, UNAOC Director Marc Scheuer will be speaking at an interfaith breakfast organized by the Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN, in cooperation with the UN Department of Public Information in New York. Other speakers will include the Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information, Mr. Kiyotaka Akasaka; Permanent Representative of Jordan to the UN, HRH Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein; and Mr. Stephen Hanmer, from the Civil Society Partnerships section of UNICEF.
Later that evening, the UNAOC and the UN Department of Public Information will be sponsoring a screening of Jacob Bender’s “Out of Cordoba: Averroes and Maimonides in Their Time and Ours” at the UN. Details may be found here.
On February 6, the Global Dialogue Foundation is holding a forum called “Unity in Diversity,” in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India in collaboration with the UNAOC. The opening session of the Forum will feature an interfaith celebration in honor of the World Interfaith Harmony Week.
