Message of the High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations
On the occasion of the International Day of Non-Violence
New York – October 2, 2015
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution on 15 June, 2005 establishing the International Day of Non-violence in 2 October to coincide with the birthday of the father of Indian Independence and the non-disputed advocate of non-violence, Mahatma Ghandi.
There is no better time to commemorate this day than these days following the adoption by the International Community of the ambitious transformative 2030 agenda which charts a course towards achieving prosperity, peace, social harmony and human rights for the world which we all share.
The notion of non-violence and settlement of disputes with peaceful means is at the core of the mission and objectives of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Peaceful dialogue is a preventive soft power tool that would save our world the scourges of wars and conflicts.
