Mérida, Spain – The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), with the support of the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY), hosted a transformative capacity-building workshop for nineteen youth participants from Latin America and the Caribbean in Mérida, Spain. Taking place from July 3-7, 2023, this workshop marked the second phase of the UNAOC Young Peacebuilders programme, now in its 6th edition.
With the aim of fostering peace and harmony, the UNAOC Young Peacebuilders programme, a peace education initiative, brought together civil society leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The participants were selected following a competitive process with applications received from all over Latin America and the Caribbean.
Guided by experienced facilitators, the participants benefited from interactive sessions on conflict analysis, innovative peacebuilding approaches, and fostering harmony and mutual respect, among others.
The workshop aims to enable young civil society leaders to design and implement impactful peace interventions. The participants are expected to leverage their newly acquired insights to craft strategies that address the pressing challenges of their respective communities.
The Young Peacebuilders programme is a flagship initiative of UNAOC, with the generous financial support of the Agencia Extremeña De Cooperación Internacional Para El Desarrollo (AEXCID), dedicated to nurturing the next generation of peacebuilders. By equipping young leaders with the necessary tools and knowledge, the programme aims to enhance the positive role of youth in issues of peace and security and in preventing violent conflict.
