Press Statement Attributable to
the Spokesperson of the High Representative for
the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
on the violent clashes in Al-Aqsa Mosque – East Jerusalem
New York- 5 April 2023
The High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Mr. Miguel Moratinos, reiterates his grave concern over the renewed violent clashes that took place in and around al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem for the second day as Muslim worshippers gathered for prayers during the Holy month of Ramadan.
The High Representative denounces the forceful entry into the holy site and eviction of Muslim worshippers as it is a violation of the right of worshippers to practice their religious rituals which are especially significant to Muslims during the holy month in Ramadan. The High Representative stresses, meanwhile, that religious sites should be used as a safe place for worship and compassion not violence, attacks and weapons.
The High Representative also recalls the “UN Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites: In Unity and Solidarity for Safe Worship” which advocates the sanctity of religious sites and safety of worshippers and stresses the right of all believers to access the holy sites and to practice their religious rituals and traditions freely, peacefully, and safely without fear or intimidation.
The High Representative recalls the spirit of these sacred days celebrated by Muslims, Jews and Christians observing Ramadan, Passover and Easter reminds us of how much we share in common. In this context, the High Representative hopes that all parties demonstrate mutual respect and refrain from provocation and violence in any form.
