Statement Attributable to
the Spokesperson of the High Representative for
the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
on the Terrorist Attack at a Mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan
New York – 12 June 2020
The High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), H.E. Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, condemns the terrorist attack that targeted the Sher Shah Suri Mosque in the western part of Kabul, Afghanistan, during Friday prayers, which killed at least four people, including one of the city’s more prominent prayer leaders Azizullah Mofleh Frotan, and wounded more, according to recent news reports.
The High Representative stresses that attacks targeting worshippers and sacred sites are intolerable and have to stop. He recalls the UN Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites, which was developed by UNAOC. He calls on all governments, as well as all relevant stakeholders, to support the implementation of the plan to guarantee the sanctity of religious sites and the safety of worshipers.
Mr. Moratinos reiterates that such odious acts should not dissuade us from working together to promote solidarity, respect, and peace globally as one humanity. On behalf of UNAOC, he expresses his condolences to the victims’ families and conveys his sympathy and solidarity to the people and the Government of Afghanistan.
