Commemorating the International Day of Conscience
New York – 6 April 2020
As all of humanity is going through these trying times, global solidarity is needed now more than ever. The High-Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Mr. Miguel Moratinos, seizes the opportunity as we commemorate the first International Day of Conscience declared April 5 (A/RES/73/329) and invites us to remember that all human beings are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of fraternity, solidarity and compassion as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As we commemorate the International Day of Conscience, we recognize an opportunity to take a moment to self-reflect, follow our conscience, and do the right thing towards each other and especially vulnerable people.
Mr. Moratinos reiterates that, as the COVID-19 pandemic feeds global anxiety, we need the power of conscience now more than ever to stay united. Now is a time for solidarity, not divisiveness. Compassion, not xenophobia. Kindness, not hatred. These are the core values embraced by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) with the aim of building just, peaceful and inclusive societies to support the achievement of Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development.
In this spirit, let us stand collectively against stigma and embrace compassion and diversity. Today is an opportunity to let our conscience lead us towards the right direction and demonstrate our solidarity for our collective future.
