Statement Attributable to
the Spokesperson of the High Representative for
the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
New York – 16 January 2020
The High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Mr. Miguel Moratinos expresses his profound sadness for the fire that erupted yesterday at the historic St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral in the city of Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, and devastated large parts of the church. He notes that St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral stands as a landmark of Equatorial Guinea, and a symbol of Catholicism around the world.
He noted that this is a terrible reminder of the fire that broke out in Notre-Dame de Paris in April 2019. He applauds the courage of the firefighters who worked tirelessly to save the Roman Catholic cathedral on Independencia Avenue in Malabo. He adds that the fire has given rise to abundant manifestations of solidarity, reminding us of the universality of religious sites in our collective consciousness, regardless of personal beliefs, faiths, and religions.
On behalf of UNAOC, the High Representative expresses his support for the Government and people of Equatorial Guinea.
