The High-Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC, Mr. Miguel Moratinos convened a consultation meeting today with religious leaders and representatives of faith-based organizations to seek their input on the Plan of Action for Safeguarding Religious Sites that he had been mandated to develop by the United Nations Secretary-General.
In the course of the meeting, the twenty participating entities explored the role of religious leaders to prevent the recurrence of attacks against places of worship and to guarantee the safety of worshipers. Participants stressed the importance of working together with the international community and other stakeholders to ensure that religious sites are places of peace and harmony.
Today’s consultation is part of the inclusive consultative process that the High Representative is undertaking, which thus far has included meetings with government officials and religious leaders in Colombo, Cairo, Baku and the Vatican.
