Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the High Representative
for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
on the attack in Nairobi, Kenya
New York – 15 January 2019
Mr. Miguel Moratinos, the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) condemns in the strongest terms the brutal terrorist attack that took place today at a hotel and office complex in the Westland district of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The High Representative reiterates that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation.
The High Representative notes that despite efforts made, certain ideological mindsets continue to project their uncivilized face in our world. Yet, these vicious forces should not hamper our efforts nor dissuade our political will to prevent and combat violent extremism, discrimination and xenophobia in all its forms.
Mr. Moratinos reiterates the commitment of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations to continue to work on promoting tolerance and understanding as well as strengthening the culture of peace among all people, regardless of the race, color, language or faith.
On behalf of UNAOC, the High Representative expresses his deepest condolences to the victims’ families and the people and the Government of Kenya.
