The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), on behalf of the Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF) Working Group on Communications, chaired by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) organizing a side event on Thursday, 28 June 2018 at United Nations Headquarters, New York.
The side-event was co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Finland and Jordan to the United Nations. The event provided an opportunity to share experiences and good practices by Member States, United Nations entities, media, and civil-society organizations in communicating with youth and youth-based organizations, in both on-line and off-line spaces, with a view to countering and preventing violent extremism. Particular attention was placed on the experiences of the Governments of Jordan and Finland in involving and empowering young people in their CVE efforts, including in the context developing and implementing National Plans of Action for Preventing Violent Extremism. The event also demonstrated the way in which communications strategies are being developed in the context of the discussions of the CTITF Working Group on Communications and programming activities of UNAOC. The participants exchanged views on advancing relevant provisions of General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, including those contained in the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, Security Council resolution 2354 (2017) and the international comprehensive framework to counter terrorist narratives
