Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson of the High Representative for
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
On the Occasion of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
New York – 21 May 2018
21 May was chosen as the “World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development” by the General Assembly in its Resolution 57/249 of 20 December 2002. It is an important instrument to promote greater awareness of the link between diverse cultures, peace, and development. They are intertwined, making this special observance so important.
In the midst of rising culturally-based conflicts, radicalization and xenophobia, the mission of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) is to promote respect for diversity, understanding and tolerance between people through its four focus areas of work: Education, Youth, Migration, and Media.
Diversity of civilizations and cultures is a fundamental feature of human society and a driving force of human progress. We cannot have peace if we don’t accept and harness diversity. We cannot achieve development and economic growth if we do not embrace diversity. The goal of sustaining peace and prevention of conflict can only be achieved if we learn to live together in inclusive, just and peaceful societies.
