Bidding Farewell to a Man of Peace: Muhammed Ali
New York – June 10, 2016
As the world bid farewell today to a legendary athlete, the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations pays his respects to Muhammed Ali as a true champion whose greatness transcends sportsmanship. Muhammed Ali stood tall and fought for his race and his Muslim faith. He spoke up for what he believed was right. In 1978, he came to the UN Special Committee against Apartheid with a message of peace and spirituality. In the mid-sixties, he embraced Islam as his faith, changed his name and proclaimed himself a Minister of the religion of Islam.
Designated as a UN Messenger of Peace in 1998, Ali spent most of his time outside the boxing ring devoted to the pursuit of peace. He brought people from all races together by preaching healing to everyone irrespective of race, religion or age. It is exactly that spirit of acceptance and diversity that the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations seeks to promote.
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations salutes “The Greatest” Muhammed Ali, as a legendary humanitarian and pray that his soul rests in peace.
