Closing Remarks by
The High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations
At Baku Forum for Intercultural Dialogue
19 May 2015
UNAOC is very proud of its partnership with the Government of Azerbaijan in co-organizing the 3rd World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue.
The Forum provided a very good platform for exchanging ideas, engaging with existing and potential partners, while at the same time re-affirming the commitment of the various stakeholders representing governments, NGOs, religious leaders and academia, on the necessity of embracing and respecting diverse cultures, promoting inclusive societies and cherishing our common and shared values, culminating into peace and security, Sustainable Development and Human Rights.
Over the past 2 days we listened to extraordinary speeches that explored a wide array of topics including: the importance of dialogue in a post 2015 world, dialogue as transformation, culture and sustainable development in post-2015 development agenda.
The alliance organized a plenary in which we examined the various drivers of violent extremism.
Panelists examined the various drivers of violent extremism and recommended concrete and effective responses to counter terrorism; such as adopting multi-faceted approaches to address the root causes of extremism, empowering religious leaders and encouraging their engagement at the community level.
Participants also discussed the enhancing of education curricula and enforcing social inclusiveness and good governance.
The Alliance also organized 2 workshops. One on Youth and the responsible and constructive use of social media, in which we discussed the rapid dissemination of, hate speech via social media platforms which leads to stereotyping and the spread of radicalizations, thus contributing to violence.
Participants who are active social media users responded to questions on how the society should address this phenomenon while being mindful of protecting the freedom of expression.
While we do so, let’s remember to observe article 19 of the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights, related instruments and relevant UN resolutions.
Let’s take into account that there is always a space for free speech and expression, but there is no merit in the freedom of insult, incitement to hatred and spreading the messages of enmity.
The 2nd workshop showcased UNAOC programming in the area of youth, who we believe are the agents of positive social changed and contributors to peace building in their capacity as young social entrepreneurs and promoters of intercultural dialogue.
The models we presented can be characterized by innovation, commitment and inspiration.
The discussion explored future actions and needs and how policy makers, donors and governments can contribute in supporting their efforts and how to take advantage of the capacity of young people for peace building and social resilience.
In conclusion, this 3rd edition showed how this forum is certainly expanding in the range of issues it brings to the discussion, by bringing more enriching and enlightening views.
We look forward to the 4th edition and to closely cooperating again with our counterparts.
Thank you.
