Eight of the UNAOC Research Network Partners are among the top 500 Universities in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released August 15 by The Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Members of the Network in this elite list include Columbia University, Florida State University (USA), University of Birmingham (UK), KU-Leuven (Belgium), Monash University (Australia), Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona(Spain).
ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, using quantitative measures on alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific, articles published in journals of Nature and Science, articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. More than 1000 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published on the web.
