A Regional Seminar on Women and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations – Challenges and Opportunities took place in Buenos Aires on 28 and 29 April 2008. This seminar is a concrete expression of the dynamism and validity of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations as a proposal aimed at offering valid responses to the challenge of diversity in a globalized world.
As announced by Argentinean Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana, the seminar took place on 28 and 29 April at the Palacio San Martín, the traditional headquarters of the Argentine Foreign Ministry. The event was opened by the President of Argentina, H. E. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. In her opening address she confirmed the full support of Argentina for the initiative which she described as an outstanding effort in favour of dialogue, understanding and tolerance between nations and cultures.
Mrs. Fernández de Kirchner committed herself to continue extending the support of her Government to the process, especially within the Latin American and Caribbean region.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Spain, H. E. Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé, the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, H. E. Jorge Sampaio, the Director General for Multilateral Political Affairs of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H. E. Hasan Gögüs and the Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Secretariat, H. E. Enrique Iglesias, followed with their respective opening remarks before turning to the substantive sessions of the four thematic panels:

- Panel 3: WOMEN AND MIGRATIONS
- Panel 4: WOMEN AND MEDIA
At the closure of the Seminar Foreign Minister Taiana announced the intention of Argentina to present a report on the outcomes of the Seminar to the next Iberoamerican Summit to be held in June 2008 in El Salvador. He also confirmed that the proceedings of the Buenos Aires Seminar would be compiled and published as a book in the near future.
