The High Representative Meets in Moscow with
Russian Foreign Minister

The High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, wrapped up today a three-day official visit to the Russian Federation in which met with Mr. Sergey V. Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Gennady Gatilov.
In his meeting with Mr. Lavrov, the High Representative pointed out to the work of UNAOC in the area of addressing the root causes of violent extremism, promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue, media and migration as well as youth through the Alliance’ programming.
On his part, Mr. Lavrov noted that the work of UNAOC is now more relevant than ever, given the global challenges our world is facing today. He stressed his Government’s support to the mandate and mission of the Alliance and expressed his readiness to further strengthen cooperation with UNAOC.
While in Moscow, the High Representative also met separately with the Deputy Director of the External Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Mufti of the Russian Council of Muftis. The meetings tackled the important role of religious leaders and faith-based organizations in providing a counter narrative to violent extremism.
The High Representative also held talks in St. Petersburg with Mr. Vladimir Kirillov, Vice Governor of the city on means of cooperation in joint activities with UNAOC.
Mr. Al-Nasser signed two MOUs with the Institute of Oriental Studies and the Russian International Affairs Council.
He addressed a Gala concert at the Bolshoi Theater on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations . He also delivered remarks at the IX Conference of the Russian International Studies Association of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-University).
